Schools For Sonography In South Florida

Sonographers produce images of the body using ultrasound technology. Physicians use the images as a diagnostic tool. Sonographers are required to have formal training through hospitals, vocational-technical institutions, colleges or the Armed Forces. South Florida, which encompasses the Miami metro area, is home to various sonography schools.


Broward College


Broward College offers a 24-month Associate of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Applicants must meet general admission requirements for Health Sciences programs and have documentation demonstrating completion of a two-year, patient-oriented health science field leading to registered, certified or licensed status. A point system determines admission. Applicants gain points for each selection criteria they meet. Clinical experiences occur concurrently with didactic courses.

Keiser University


Keiser University awards an Associate of Science degrees in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and Diagnostic Vascular Sonography. Applicants are required to submit signed statements of good health and proof of completion of general education courses with a grade of C or better. They should also have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a four-point scale. The program is comprised of 91 credit hours.

Miami Dade College


According to the Miami Dade College website, the school is the largest and most diverse college in the nation. The college boasts eight campuses and 170,000 students from across the globe. Miami Dade College awards an Associate of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography through its School of Health Sciences Medical Center Campus. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, complete the college application packet and take the placement exam. In addition, they must complete a program admission application and enroll or have completed the general education and science courses associated with the program. Admission is competitive.

Nova Southeastern University


Nova Southeastern University offers a Bachelor of Health degree in Science-Vascular Sonography. Applicants are required to complete a minimum of 30 credit hours of general education coursework prior to admission. The program consists of 125 credit hours. The first year includes lecture, labs, online courses and integrated clinical training. The second year is almost entirely clinical training, with over 1,500 hours of on-site, hands-on experience.

Palm Beach State College


Palm Beach State College offered its first bachelor's degree in 2009. The college offers an Associate in Science degree in Sonography and a four-semester college credit certificate. Applicants are required to submit official high school or GED transcripts and official college transcripts from all post-secondary institutions. Applicants must also have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and 12 or more semester hours of college coursework.
