Diagnostic Medical Sonography Programs In Florida

Diagnostic medical sonographers take pictures of the inside of the human body.


Diagnostic medical sonographers, also known as ultrasound technicians, use high-frequency sound waves to take images of the inside of the body. Employment in this competitive field requires successful completion of a diagnostic medical sonography program. These programs offer students an opportunity to learn the principles of ultrasound technology and to apply them to a clinical practicum or internship.


Broward College


Broward College offers a diagnostic medical sonography program accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. This 24-month associate's degree in science (A.S.) program trains students in medical sonographic physics, obstetric-gynecology sonography, principles of sonographic imaging and sonography of the vascular system. The program also has a clinical practicum component, which allows students to practice classroom concepts in a hands-on setting. This program prepares students to sit for certification exams offered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.

Central Florida Institute


Central Florida Institute has an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program that leads to an associate's degree in applied science (A.A.S.). Available at the Orlando and Tampa campuses, this program prepares students to work as entry-level abdominal ultrasound technicians, neurosonographers or obstetric-gynecological sonographers. Coursework focuses on the principles of abdominal, obstetric-gynecological and pediatric sonography. This program prepares students to take the Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer examination offered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.

Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences


Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences offers an associate's degree and bachelor's degree in diagnostic medical sonography. The associate's degree program requires students to complete 41.5 credits of ultrasound coursework. Courses include introduction to sonography, patient care for the health sciences, abdominal sonography and a clinical practicum. Students choose either the general ultrasound program or the cardiovascular ultrasound program.


The bachelor's degree program consists of 27 general education credits and 34 diagnostic medical sonography credits. General education requirements include sectional anatomy, technical writing and introduction to applied statistics. The bachelor's degree program takes nine trimesters to complete. Each trimester lasts 14 weeks.

Miami Dade College


Miami Dade College offers an associate's in science degree for diagnostic medical sonography. Prerequisites for admission to the program include human anatomy and physiology, English composition, general biology, physics, introduction to health care and college algebra. Coursework in the diagnostic medical sonography curriculum includes abdominal sonography, sonographic cross-sectional anatomy, obstetric-gynecological sonography, echocardiography, small parts sonography, neurosonography and pediatric sonography. This program also contains a clinical practice component.

Valencia Community College


The diagnostic medical sonography program at Valencia Community College leads to an associate's degree in science. Prior to admission to this program, students must complete courses in college algebra, English composition and human anatomy and physiology, achieving a grade of C or better in each course. Students entering this program must also have a minimum 2.5 college grade point average. Coursework in the diagnostic medical sonography program includes methods of patient care, introduction to medical sonography, medical terminology, sectional anatomy, acoustic physics and instrumentation and clinical sonography.
