Causes Of Stomach Cramping

The term "stomach cramp" is rather vague. What exactly people are referring to when using the term isn't always clear and can differ between people. Stomach cramps are best defined as muscle spasms within the lower abdomen that cause mild to severe pain. There are many conditions known to cause stomach cramping, most of which are easily remedied.

Menstruation

Menstruation is one of the most common causes for stomach cramps. Cramping is usually caused by excessive production of hormone-like substances in the body known as prostaglandins. Too much prostaglandins will result in inflammation and pain.

Food Intolerance

Many people find it difficult to digest certain foods, particularly those made with dairy products (lactose intolerance) or raw or processed foods. If an individual's stomach is sensitive to such substances, it may cause a high gastric concentration within the digestive system, resulting in stomach cramps.

Indigestion and Overeating

Overindulging in food will typically cause problems for your digestive system. When eating, food requires enough space and time to be digested properly. Overeating requires the stomach and intestines to work harder simply to absorb all the excess food. This extra work, plus the stretching of the abdominal walls, often results in cramping.

Food Poisoning

If food is not handled or prepared properly, it is likely to become contaminated with bacteria or viruses. These dangerous micro-organisms can wreak havoc in your stomach and intestines, not only causing cramping, but diarrhea, nausea and vomiting as well.

Chronic Constipation

Constipation is uncomfortable enough without causing cramping. But an individual who experiences chronic constipation is often susceptible to stomach cramps. If there is a problem with chronic constipation, fecal impaction can occur. When this happens, hardened stools gather at the bottom of the large intestine, causing blockage that results in cramping. As the fecal matter continues to build up, pressure also builds, resulting in further cramping. Such complications should be checked out by a doctor.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea can be caused by any number of things, including tainted food, a bacterial or viral infection, or an intolerance to a certain type of food. However, it is often accompanied with stomach cramps. When dealing with diarrhea, the stomach muscles may spasm, causing painful cramps.

Excercise

Any time the muscles of the abdomen are stretched in a manner that the body is not used to, cramping is likely to occur.
