Post Cancer Hairstyles

Hair loss is caused by chemotherapy because it's designed to attack fast-growing cells.

Cancer, of whatever type, can undermine every element of your life. Aside from the terror of initial diagnosis and the nausea and pain associated with treatment, its all too easy to let the disease take over your life. Even after a successful series of treatments, cancer and treatments can still leave marks, the most obvious of which is also one of the most hurtful -- hair loss.

Full Bald

One of the simplest, and bravest, styles to opt for after your treatment is simply to not let the hair grow back. This has two advantages; its an extremely simple look to maintain and it means you don't have to adjust to having hair again. The downsides are obvious, with the look being far from culturally acceptable for women. However, for male cancer survivors, especially ones who were already balding prior to their treatment, the look has an undeniable appeal.

The Wet Look

One of the most difficult periods to manage with your hair is when its long enough to look untidy but not quite long enough to style. One of the best options at this point is the "wet look." Either apply gel so you can move your hair into a style you like, or style it so it sits tight against your head.

Wigs

Not wanting your hair on display until you're ready is perfectly understandable. In this instance, wigs are one of the best courses of action. If you've already been using them over the course of your treatment, you can always continue, or buy a new one to celebrate the end of the treatment. Or, if your hair is strong enough you could have extensions put in place to help you feel more comfortable.

Gamine

Gamine is a French word that translates as "urchin" or "waif" and one of the defining characteristics of Gamine as a style is short, bobbed hair. This is a particularly good look for women, and the nature of the style makes it accessible as well as a good bridge to longer styles once your hair has grown further. Look at films such as "Roman Holiday" and "Amelie" for good examples of this style.
