Florida has several Medicaid programs for low-income residents.
Eligibility for Florida Medicaid is based on several factors, including income. Income limits for this program are based on the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). The federal poverty level is an official income level for poverty that is released by the government each year. The FPL is based on household size, so households with more people can make more money and still qualify. None of the programs listed here have an asset limit that must be met in order to qualify.
Pregnancy and Family Planning
Pregnant women in Florida need to come from a household that collectively makes less than 185 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. Women who come from a qualifying household and who either had a delivery paid for by the Medicaid program or an abortion within two years before they become ineligible for Medicaid are able to qualify for these services.
KidCare Medicaid
KidCare Medicaid is for children up to age 20; however, different age groupings have different income requirements. Children under 1 must come from a household that collectively makes less than 200 percent of the FPL. Children 1 through 5 must come from a household that collectively makes less than 133 percent of the FPL. Children ages 6 through 20 must come from a household that collectively makes less than 100 percent of the FPL. If a child does not reside with his parents, then only the child's income is counted --- not his caretaker's income.
Female Cancer
Women who are under 65 and have been diagnosed with either breast or cervical cancer can qualify for the Medicaid program if they come from a household that collectively makes less than 200 percent of the FPL.
Emergency Care
Those not citizens of the United States are not eligible for the previous programs; however, if they otherwise meet the income requirements for the programs, then they can receive assistance for emergency room bills.
