About The Revlon Breast Cancer Walk

About the Revlon Breast Cancer Walk

The Revlon Breast Cancer Walk is a funds-driven walk that is dedicated to curing breast cancer and assisting those afflicted with it. To do this, participants raise pledge money from people who are willing to sponsor their walks. This money then goes to a barrage of worthy causes that hope to advance breast cancer research and women's survival rates. With breast cancer affecting so many women, the Revlon Breast Cancer Walk and other walks of its kind have become very popular. Approximately 50,000 participants walk the Revlon walk every year.

History

The Revlon Breast Cancer Walk was established in 1993 by the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a charitable foundation that urges those within the entertainment industry to lend their support to various health issues, and a few others, including Ronald Perelman, Lilly Tartikoff and the Davis Group.

Features

The Revlon Breast Cancer Walk consists of a 3-mile (or 5-kilometer) walk that wraps around the local landscape of New York and Los Angeles. Many participants wear pink, a color that is commonly associated with breast cancer awareness. Some participants also wear a shirt, hat or other item that is dedicated to the memory or support of a loved one who has battled breast cancer. The walk also has a health expo where participants can gain information on the disease, treatments, preventions, diagnosis and treatment centers for breast cancer.

Time Frame

Registration for the walk begins early, usually around 7 a.m. During this time participants or teams can check in, receive their Revlon Breast Cancer Walk t-shirts and explore the health expo. A few speeches, usually from board members, celebrities and survivors, take place before the run, which commences around 9 a.m. or so, depending on whether the event has started on time and the speeches were not too long. The walk lasts for approximately 3 hours, though some people complete it in less than an hour. Photographs and a small party take place at noon, once most of the participants have reached the finish line.

Geography

There are two Revlon Breast Cancer Walks held each year. One is in Los Angeles, the other is in New York. The Los Angeles route takes you all around the University of Southern California and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The walk begins on the corner of Figueroa and 39th streets, encompasses the university and parts of South Los Angeles, and ends inside the Coliseum. The New York route begins on Seventh Avenue, just north of Times Square, where the opening ceremony takes place. The walk goes around Central Park near Central Park West and ends between North Meadow and East Meadow.

Considerations

The money raised at the Revlon Breast Cancer Walk goes to support cancer research, provide diagnostic assistance to needy women living with cancer, and care for cancer-stricken women and their families. There is a $30 registration fee for the walk, which does not go to cancer research, but to cover the costs of the event. The pledge money, the money you raise for the walk, is what goes to cancer patients and research.
