Requirements to Work as an X-Ray Technician in Australia
X-ray technicians in Australia are also known as diagnostic radiographers or medical imaging technologists. As explained by the Australian Institute of Radiography (AIR), their job is to produce high-quality medical images that help medical professionals to diagnose, monitor and treat a person's injury or illness. Radiographers use high-tech equipment to create the images and must meet a set of criteria before they can work in Australia.
Personal Qualities
A radiographer needs to know use modern radiology machines, so she will have a scientific and technical background. Additionally, a radiographer should have excellent interpersonal skills, as the job involves interactions with distressed patients. A good X-ray technician will demonstrate compassion and understanding to his patients, and be able to clearly explain the procedures of radiography.
Education
To work as an X-ray technician, you must study diagnostic radiography/medical imaging at a university. These three-year courses are offered in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. After completing the course, you must do a professional development year (PDY) to receive accreditation. All courses must be accredited by AIR. Four-year courses are available at Monash University in Victoria, and more are being accredited in Western Australia and South Australia. Students undertaking a four-year course do not need to complete a PDY.
Accreditation
To receive a statement of accreditation from AIR, graduates must complete their education as outlined above. Foreign students in Australia must also give evidence of understanding and fluency in English, by scoring no less than 7 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and having a minimum of a level B in the Australian Occupational English (OET) test. X-ray technicians who have qualified outside of Australia must have their qualifications assessed by the Overseas Qualification Assessment Panel (OQAP) before migrating to Australia.
Registration
Each Australian state has its own regulations about registering or licensing X-ray technicians. The authority on registration in each state is the registration board, and X-ray technicians should contact it when seeking employment. Fees vary depending on the state. Considerations
X-ray technicians who have not practiced for several years will need to meet certain requirements before resuming work. They must undergo a retraining program called the resumption of professional practice (RPP). Costs and levels of retraining are dependent upon the number of years a professional has been out of practice. Someone returning to radiography after a 10-year absence may be required to retake the original course.
