Hike Feather Falls California

Feather Falls is listed as the sixth largest waterfall in the United States. The waterfall runs all year, but the melting snow pack in springtime produces the strongest flow.

Instructions

1. Drive east from Oroville on highway 162 about 8 miles to Forbestown Road. Take a right and drive 6 miles to Lumpkin Road. Take a left on Lumpkin and go about 10.5 miles to the sign for Feather Falls Trail. Turn left and go 1.5 miles to the parking lot.

2. Start from the trailhead and descend for about a mile to where the trail crosses Frey Creek. The woods are a mixed conifer forest, with big-leaf maple, California bay, flowering dogwood and Douglas fir.

3. Continue on the trail as it follows downstream along Frey Creek. If you go in the spring, you may witness the flight of millions of ladybird beetles. The lady bugs fill the air after hibernating for the winter.

4. Climb out of the canyon and into the foothill woodland community. This area is open to direct sunlight and is hot and dry in summer. You may hear the sounds of lizards rustling leaves and grass.

5. Arrive at the falls to view an amazing 640-foot silver band of water. A viewing dock is set on a knife ridge next to the waterfall and seems to hang in mid-air with the Feather River Canyon below.
