About Large Breasts

Life with an above-average bustline can be frustrating. Finding clothes that fit is a challenge, and a good bra may sometimes seem like an impossibility. Women with extremely large breasts may experience discomfort during physical activities such as running, as well as back and neck pain and other health problems. Some women even consider breast-reduction surgery to increase their comfort and improve their health, if large breasts are causing physical or emotional discomfort.

Significance

Large breasts remain an appealing sexual asset in our culture, featured prominently in pornography and pop culture. Presumably, this has anthropological roots in fertility and lactation; however, the modern significance is unrelated to the functional use of breasts for infant feeding. Some women find that they are judged for their breasts, with expectations that they may be dumb or sexually promiscuous solely because they have large breasts. Others may feel pressured to consider breast-enhancement surgeries to feel more curvaceous or attractive.

Function

The primary function of breasts is unrelated to their size. Breasts are primarily intended for lactation, with a secondary role in sexuality. Breasts are composed of both ductal tissue and fatty tissue. The exact composition of the breast tissue varies from woman to woman. For women with large breasts, mammography and breast self-examinations can be more difficult, especially on younger, denser breasts.

Size

Fnding a bra that is supportive and comfortable is a challenge for any large-busted woman. Many stores only stock sizes up to a DD. Furthermore, traditional bra-fitting instructions often work poorly on larger-busted women. The typical instructions suggest measuring the underbust and full bust measurements, then adding 5 inches to the underbust and subtracting the difference. Larger-busted women may get a better bra fit by adding nothing or only 1 to 2 inches to the underbust measurement. Finding the right-size bra can improve the fit of clothing and overall comfort.

Considerations

Finding flattering clothing that fits is especially difficult if you have large breasts. You may find that you have to buy larger sizes to fit your chest. Consider making friends with the tailor at your local alterations shop. This can help you build a wardrobe of clothing that fits and flatters. You may also find that knit fabrics are a bit more friendly to your figure. Avoid clothing that is too loose, which can make you look larger than you are. Properly fitting clothes will allow you to look curvy, as opposed to rectangular.

Prevention/Solution

If your breasts are causing substantial difficulties, you may want to consider breast-reduction surgery. This is a significant surgery, with a relatively slow recovery and substantial scarring. It is often covered by insurance, unlike most cosmetic procedures. While most plastic surgeons perform breast-reduction procedures, be certain to thoroughly interview surgeons before scheduling the procedure. Most women are quite happy with the end results of breast-reduction surgery.
