Breast cancer affect hundreds of thousands of women each year in America.
Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in women, affecting nearly 200,000 women per year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With more than 40,000 deaths attributed to this disease in 2006, the fight against breast cancer continues through fund-raising events all over the world. In October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there are many events each year to raise money to help end this deadly disease.
Avon Walk
In mid-October each year, thousands of people gather in New York City for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. This annual event takes participants on a marathon-sized walk on Saturday, followed by a 13-mile walk on Sunday all in the name of breast cancer treatment and research.
Walkers come may be local, or if they are visitors, they can can book a room in a reserved block at the Sheraton Hotel on Seventh Avenue and 53rd Street in Manhattan. The walk itself gets under way beginning at 5:15 a.m. at the Hudson River Park's Pier 84. The walk meanders throughout the city and ends at Randall's Island.
Taste For The Cure
Each October the University of California, San Francisco Franc Buck Breast Care Center sponsors Taste for the Cure, a fund raiser that supports educational and informational services for women diagnosed with breast cancer.
Taste for the Cure partners with a long list of San Francisco restaurants to invite hungry supporters to eat with them and to make donations to the cause. Participating restaurants, typically indicated by posters in their windows and on a list at the center, will match donor donations during the event.
Pink Ribbon Challenge
The Pink Ribbon Challenge is a nationwide effort by the National Breast Cancer Foundation aimed at raising money for free mammograms and breast cancer early detection. The Pink Ribbon Challenge is a partnership between participating radio stations across the country, top music celebrities and several corporate sponsors.
Celebrities and radio personalities remind listeners to visit radio station websites throughout the month of October and click on the pink ribbon. This click redirects the listener to The Breast Cancer Site, where another click on a button that says "Fund Free Mammograms" turns into a corporate sponsor's cash donation to the effort.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation distributes the money raised during the Pink Ribbon Challenge to various mobile mammography units, hospitals, clinics and other facilities across America. Celebrities that have participated in the Pink Ribbon Challenge in the past have included Martina McBride, Donny Osmond and Christian group Mercy Me.
