Calculate True Position

You can calculate true position manually or with a true position calculator.


True position is an engineering term used to describe the proper placement of machine parts. Specifically, it expresses the amount of variance that is acceptable between the blueprint of a piece and its finished counterpart. This is useful information for machinists to have because it allows them to adjust their work according to the degree of precision that each specific part requires.


Instructions


1. Gather the necessary information. You will need to know the measurements of the two different offsets found on the part. These offsets are commonly referred to as "Offset x" and "Offset y," and they refer to the size difference between the finished product and the blueprint upon which it was based.


2. Access an online true position calculator (see Resources section).


3. Type the information gathered from Step 1 into the appropriate fields of the calculator. You only need to be concerned with the "Offset x" and "Offset y" boxes at this point.


4. Locate the button on the calculator labeled "Find True Position" and click it. The true position will be automatically displayed.
