Technology Universities In Australia

Australia has several leading technology universities.

People wishing to study technology have several universities from which to choose in Australia. So Australians don't need to travel to the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom to go to such universities because technology and science programs are right their back yard. In fact, several of Australia's more technology-focused schools made a "U.S. News & World Report" list of the best engineering and IT universities in the world.

University of Melbourne

University of Melbourne ranks 29 on the "U.S. News & World Report" list. The Melbourne School of Engineering has been around since 1861 and has a varied list of departments within the school, including biomedical, chemical, civil, computer science, geometrics and mechanical engineering. Recent work with bubbles at the University of Melbourne research departments may improve the quality of ice cream and champagne and perhaps even increase efficiency in the mining industry. Other research at Melbourne has shed light on how black holes eat matter.

University of New South Wales

Ranked 33 on the "U.S. News & World Report" list, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) is one of Australia's leading research universities. It offers a wide range of engineering degrees, including degrees focusing on photovoltaic and solar engineering, bioinformatics, geoinformation systems, biomedical engineering and petroleum engineering. The school also offers a "flexible first year," allowing undergraduate students to take some time before declaring what branch of engineering they wish to study. The several research projects at UNSW include one aimed at creating a bionic eye.

University of Sydney

The University of Sydney, ranked 40 on the "U.S. News & World Report" list, has schools specifically devoted to aerospace engineering, chemical and biomecular engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and information technologies. First-year engineering students who may require additional help with physics, chemistry or math are offered academic assistance to brush up on these topics. In addition to classes, each student is given 12 weeks' practical training in an industry relevant to his field of study. By the school's estimates, most engineering students get a job within six months of graduation.

Australian National University

The Australian National University (ANU) comes in at number 42 on the list. Its college of engineering and computer science collaborates with a wide variety of schools and companies for their research. ANU has worked with German companies to develop solar technologies and with U.S. companies to create computer systems and hardware. In Australia, ANU worked with TransGrid to create unmanned vehicles for defense purposes.

Monash University

In addition to the six departments of the engineering school at its Clayton campus, Monash University also has engineering programs at its Gippsland and Malaysia campuses. Monash engineering researchers work on ways to make rural areas energy self-sufficient so the cost of energy production and transportation can be decreased. The robotics researchers at Monash work with volatile chemicals to learn whether or not they can be used to help robots communicate with each other. Monash comes in at number 50 on the "U.S. News & World Report" list.
