Beaches In Mazatlan Mexico

Mazatlan's beaches are a must-see.

Mazatlan, Mexico has become a popular destination for North Americans. Travelers from the United States, Mexico, Canada and other countries descend on Mazatlan to escape cold weather or enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. Not only is the city itself a popular tourist stop, its beaches are legendary. Paying a visit to one of Mazatlan's many beaches will ensure that you get the best Mexican experience imaginable. The stress of your normal life will simply melt away.

Playa Norte

Playa Norte ("North Beach") is one of Mazatlan's best beaches: Advantage Mexico notes that the three-mile long stretch almost never has a crowd, except perhaps during major holidays. This beach is mostly populated by locals, so you don't have to worry about running into a multitude of other tourists. The surf can vary greatly: It may be a nice calm, relaxing swell on some days, while other days may see large waves suitable for surfing.

Advantage Mexico recommends that if you see a lifeguard on duty, you should stay near the shore for safety. Mazatlan's official city website notes that Playa Norte is home to a number of excellent restaurants that feature drinks and seafood.

Playa Camaron / Playa Gaviotas

Just north of Playa Norte are Playa Camaron and Playa Gaviotas. This area is often called the "Golden Zone," and is more of a tourist hotspot, featuring a string of successful hotels running along the shore. According to Advantage Mexico, Playa Camaron and Playa Gaviotas are popular due to their quintessential Mexican crystal sand and beautiful sunsets.

If you want to hang out with the crowd, check out the El Cid section of the Golden Zone, particularly the section that extends toward Joe's Oyster Bar. Mazatlan's official website warns that visitors should steer clear of the vendors. As they tend to harass visitors, it's recommended that you sit nearer to the water and out of their paths.

Playa Olas Altas

For a more relaxing stay in Mazatlan, Mazatlan's official city website recommends Playa Olas Altas. This beach is located south of Playa Norte, so you're in for a bit of a walk if you're traveling down from the Golden Zone. This is a very popular destination for surfers; its waves can be very big, especially in the summer. Advantage Mexico notes that while Playa Olas Altas isn't recommended for swimmers, there are a number of excellent cafes nearby where you can enjoy the scenery.
