Centesis
Centesis is a surgical puncture that removes fluid for diagnostic purposes or to remove excess fluid from a body part or organ. Health care professionals would use the word "centesis" as a suffix in conjunction with a combining word that describes the treated body part. For example, arthrocentesis is the surgical puncture of a joint to remove synovial fluid for analysis or to alleviate pain in the joint.
Surgical Biopsy
Surgical biopsy involves removing a small piece of tissue for examination or to confirm and establish a diagnosis. A biopsy could involve an incision, an excision or a hollow needle. When the surgeon removes the cell or tissue, he will look at it under a microscope for a full examination. Surgical biopsies help determine the status and stage of cancer within a body part.
Surgical Ankylosis
Surgical ankylosis involves the surgical fusion or joining together of two bones. When fused together, they will help to stiffen the joint. Surgeons will perform surgical ankylosis on ankles, elbows or shoulders. This procedure helps treat severe arthritis or damaged joints.
