Breast cancer can spread to any part of the body. The lungs are the second most common area for breast cancer metastasis. Sixty to 70 percent of women who die from breast cancer suffer from lung metastasis.
No Symptoms
When breast cancer has metastasized to the lungs, 25 percent of patients have no symptoms. The cancer in the lungs is commonly detected by a routine X-ray or a CT scan.
Cough
If breast cancer has metastasized to the lungs, a non-productive or dry cough can be a symptom. Coughing that produces bloody sputum is a sign for concern.
Pain
Chest pain due to the lungs being irritated from the cancer can be another symptom of breast cancer that has metastasized to the lungs. Pain in the shoulders and down the arms can also be present.
Shortness of Breath
Shortness of breath can be an indication that breast cancer has spread to the lung areas. The metastasized cancer can lead to issues with breathing.
Considerations
When breast cancer has metastasized to the lungs, it is considered to be at the most advanced and is stage IV. Treatment is usually limited to relieving the symptoms and helping to extend the patient's life.
