Car Weight Reduction Tips

You can lighten the load on your car by replacing the hood and trunk.

When you lose some of the excess weight on your car, you can enhance the overall performance. Your car speeds up since the car is lighter, resulting in less weight to pull. If you want to reduce your vehicle's weight, there are alterations you can perform.

Remove Additional Weight

You gain up to 2 percent in fuel mileage when you eliminate 100 pounds of unnecessary items from your vehicle, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Change Wheels

Replace your wheels with alloy wheels to reduce your vehicle's weight. "Lighter wheels mean better handling when changing directions" because of the revolving forces, according to the Torque Cars website. In addition, when you have alloy wheels the airflow improves toward the brakes.

Remove the Spare

There may come a time you need your spare wheel, but by removing the spare from

your vehicle you reduce weight. Most tires allow you to get home or to the nearest service station without air, if you drive slowly.

Lighten the Body of the Car

Replace the vehicle's hood and trunk, which are typically the heaviest panels on a vehicle. Changing the hood and trunk to carbon fiber will reduce your car's weight. You also can use fiberglass, but it may resemble plastic.

Replace the Glass

Remove the glass from your windshield and side windows to lighten the load. You can replace the windows with Perspex. Watch manufacturers use the material to create the unbreakable glass in watches. Perspex is clear heavy-duty acrylic plastic resin.
