Breast Band Types

A breast band is designed for use after a breast augmentation. It is meant to compress the area around the breasts and provide ample support for implants, as well as preventing implants from shifting from their intended positions. Some breast bands even assist with "dropping" implants into the correct position during healing. Breast bands come in many different styles, including specialty breast binders that are better suited for breast reductions and mastectomies.

Using a Breast Band

Many surgeons recommend using a breast band or binder in the first few weeks after a breast augmentation. Depending on the type of surgery you have had and the anticipated recovery time, your surgeon may instruct you to wear a band some of the time, or even all of the time. Manufacturers of breast bands understand that most wearers will be in the bands for long periods of time, so they use breathable fabrics that are soft and stretchy in order to ensure maximum comfort.

Precautions

Speak to your surgeon about which type of breast band is right for you. Your body type, the size of your breasts and the type of procedure you have had will determine the appropriate supportive breast band to use. Your surgeon might even supply you with a specific breast band or surgical bra to wear. Your surgeon will also explain how often and for how many weeks you must wear the device.

The Bandeau

The Bandeau is a surgical bra band that can be used with sub-muscular (under the muscle) or sub-glandular (on top of the muscle) breast augmentation. The top strap features Velcro closures on both ends that allow for angle and amount of compression adjustment. The inner side of the Bandeau is lined with soft padding to allow comfortable wearing and protection of the infra-mammary crease (a horizontal incision that is made beneath the breast).

Semi-Shaped Bra

This soft-cup, slightly shaped and contoured front-closure bra is suited for women who are recovering from breast reductions, breast reconstruction procedures or tram reconstruction. Velcro shoulders, subtle contours and sturdy fabric provides plenty of support and comfort for the wearer. It is available with a hook or Velcro enclosure.

Create Your Own Breast Band

Pair a comfortable front enclosure bra or sports bra with an Ace bandage, and you have your very own breast band! The stretchy, elastic material of the Ace bandage can be adjusted to create the desired amount of compression, and the entire wrap can easily be moved to a more preferred angle.

Some women may even cut the straps off of older sports bras, and then use the remaining band as a breast band. The advantage to this choice is having a band that you've worn before, so comfort is assured.
