Become A Radiographer In Ireland

The main role of the radiographer is the interpretation of X-ray images.

To become a radiographer in Ireland, you are required to have studied a radiography degree. These full-time courses last a minimum of three years, although there is the option to study a two-year postgraduate course if you have already studied a different, relevant course at degree level.

Once you have completed a degree you will be able to search and apply for jobs as a radiographer in Ireland.

Instructions

1. Search for the degree courses available. There is only one Irish and one Northern Irish radiography degree available. These are at University College, Dublin and Ulster University, Northern Ireland. More information on these courses can be found at qualifax.ie and searching for radiography in the course search function.

Search for radiography courses at ucas.ac.uk for the full list of United Kingdom (UK) radiography degrees. Any radiography degree studied in the UK is acceptable for working in Irish hospitals.

Reading a degree in radiography is usually a 50/50 split between academic, classroom work and gaining practical experience.

2. Decide on the institution and course you wish to apply for. There are a number of issues to consider here, such as course fees, location, reputation of the university and specific course offered. Once you have decided which institution(s) you wish to apply for, start the application process.

3. Apply to your chosen institution. Applications can be carried out online or in some cases it may be possible to print a hard copy of an application form.

Filling out the application form is an involved process, often involving in-depth essay based questions. You will almost certainly be asked to supply two references that the university will contact to help them make their decision.

Draft and re-draft your application. It is also a good idea to have somebody you trust read over your application for mistakes and general tips on improving it. When filling it out, bear in mind the qualities that the university will be looking for in their radiography students.

4. Complete your degree course. Following your years of studying, assuming you have passed your course, you can now start searching and applying for radiography work. Visit hse.ie to search for any and all available roles in the Irish health care system. For jobs in the UK's National Health Service (NHS), visit jobs.nhs.uk.
