Florida Medicaid Information

Florida's Medicaid program covers prescription drugs and medical services for low-income individuals.

Medicaid is a state-operated, federally- and state-funded health insurance program for low-income pregnant women, children, the elderly and disabled individuals. You can apply for Medicaid in Florida at one of the 11 local Medicaid offices.

Resources

Eligibility requirements for Florida's Medicaid program requires meeting resource requirements. Resources may not exceed $2,000 and include cash, checking and savings accounts, IRAs, stocks, bonds, life insurance policies with a cash value, vehicles (one is not counted), property (one house is not counted if it is the primary residence) and other cash-value items.

Spenddown

If your income is solely from disability benefits and exceeds $690 per month, you may be required to pay a portion of your medical costs each month before Medicaid will begin to cover your medical expenses. You will be required to pay the dollar amount that your income exceeds $690 towards your medical costs each month. For example, if you earn $900 per month in Social Security disability, you will be required to pay the first $310 of your medical costs each month.

Services

Florida Medicaid covers a wide range of medical services, including nursing home care, in-home health services, inpatient and outpatient medical services. Mental health services, including individual and group therapy, psychiatric medication management, case management, supervised group living and partial hospitalization are also covered under Florida Medicaid.

SSI

If you are currently receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) from the Social Security Administration and reside in Florida, you are automatically eligible for Florida's Medicaid program. This is not the case in many other states.
