Ohio Nursing Scholarships And Grants

Nursing grants and scholarships are availabe as both small and large awards.

Third-party organizations, hospitals, the federal government and colleges and universities provide scholarships and grants for nursing education in Ohio. The majority of these scholarships are provided in an attempt to rectify the nursing shortage in the United States. Most of the awards are reserved exclusively for Ohio residents or those attending nursing school in the state. Federal grants, however, are available to all qualified Americans. Grants and scholarships are available at the graduate and undergraduate level.

The Ohio State University

The Ohio State University (OSU) offers a number of financial assistance opportunities to nursing students. In 2011, the OSU College of Nursing received a U.S. Department of Education Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need grant. This is a three-year grant designed to pay a financial assistance stipend to students in the doctoral program. Funding under this grant is $131,265 for the first year. Undergraduate nursing students that are African American, Asian American, Latin American, American Indian/Alaska Native and Ohio Appalachian are eligible for scholarships through the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Other awards are available through the school's office of financial aid.

Ohio Nurses Association

Ohio Nurses Association is a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to nursing students and registered nurses seeking further education opportunities. Through the Ohio Nurses Foundation (ONF), the association provides grants for research and scholarships for education. ONF research grants are awarded in amounts of up to $2,000 to fund research projects undertaken by registered nurses. Scholarships such as Minority Student Scholarship and the Deborah Hague Memorial Scholarship are awarded to Ohio residents pursuing nursing education. The Rice Memorial Scholarship is provided to nursing students who are cancer survivors or have close relatives diagnosed with cancer.

Akron General

Akron General is an Ohio hospital that awards the Service League Nursing Scholarship to nursing students. Eligible candidates will be accepted to or enrolled in an accredited baccalaureate nursing program in Ohio. The scholarship is awarded irrespective of race, religion, sex, age, disability or national origin to students who maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Akron General awards this scholarship every year. The annual application deadline is March 1. All finalists are required to interview in person. Award recipients are announced in April of each year.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awards a nursing scholarship through the Health Resources and Services Administration. These scholarships are designed to help rectify what the department has deemed "the critical shortage of registered nurses currently experienced by certain types of health care facilities." Scholarships are awarded to qualified students who agree to work at least two years for a facility experiencing a nursing shortage. The award covers tuition, required fees, reasonable costs including textbooks, clinical supplies and laboratory expenses and provide recipients with a monthly stipend. Students throughout the United States, including Ohio, are eligible to apply.
