Schools In Va Offering Xray Tech Training

Educational opportunities for prospective x-ray technicians.


X-ray technicians are medical professionals who are responsible for using medical imaging equipment to take pictures inside the human body. Training often takes place in community colleges and requires students to graduate with a degree in radiologic technology or radiography. Careers are available within hospitals, physician's offices, health clinics and imaging centers. There are various schools and colleges throughout the state of Virginia that offer programs for prospective x-ray technicians.


Tidewater Community College


The radiologic technology program is a two-year program that prepares students for a career as an x-ray technician. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology accredits the program at Tidewater Community College. The curriculum includes courses in human anatomy and physiology, CPR, medical terminology, radiology safety, radiographic procedures, human disease and radiography and radiographic equipment. In addition to radiologic technology courses, students also must complete general education courses in history, math, English, humanities and sciences. Graduates are eligible to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination.

Central Virginia Community College


Students in the radiologic technology program learn to explain x-ray procedures, position patients, determine correct voltage, process images and provide radiation protection for patients. The courses in this program include radiographic procedures, radiologic science, patient care, radiographic equipment, radiographic theory and radiation protection. Students are able to participate in clinical experiences at Lynchburg General Hospital, Halifax Regional Hospital and Central Virginia Imaging.

Eastern Shore Community College


The radiologic technology program at Eastern Shore Community College is offered in conjunction with Riverside School of Health Careers. The curriculum is available through online course, video conferencing and clinical experiences at Riverside Shore Hospital. Courses are available in radiologic procedures, radiation protection, radiologic equipment and medical terminology. Students learn to apply their knowledge of physiology, anatomy and positioning to radiologic imaging procedures. Graduates are eligible for certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
