DXA is an advanced form of radiologic imaging to determine bone density.
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA or dexa), also known as bone densitometry or bone density scanning, is an advanced form of X-ray technology used to measure bone loss. According to the American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America, DXA scanning is most commonly used to scan the lower spine and hips and is most often performed on children.
AHEC
The Advanced Health Education Center conducts a two-day Comprehensive Bone Densitometry course at locations in New York, Texas and California. The course covers bone formation and resorption, bone diseases, scanning techniques and equipment operation and calibration. The course represents eight credits towards higher education qualifications.
Florida Hospital College
Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences offers a distance learning Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences. The course takes approximately two years and four months to complete and includes X-ray, DXA and CT/MRI in its curriculum. Graduates of the program also receive American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification.
International Society
The International Society for Clinical Densitometry offers a Bone Densitometry Course which is divided into two programs: the Clinician Course for MDs, PhDs, DOs, nurse pactitioners and physician assistants who are involved in the interpretation of DXA scans; and the Technologist Course for technologists and allied health professionals who are involved in the performance of the bone densitometry examination.
The two-day courses is offered "several times a year" at locations across the U.S. The courses are for qualified radiography professionals who are seeking to add to their skill set by learning DXA scanning. Upon completion of the courses, participants are qualified to interpret or perform DXA scans.
Medical Technology Management
The Medical Technology Management Institute offers Bone Densitometry courses twice a year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. According to their website, "this 3-day course is a comprehensive review of the role of bone densitometry in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis." As at November 2010, the cost of the course is $695 and there are discounts for Institute members.
