Nasal Injection
Unlike the flu shot, FluMist is sprayed into both nostrils of the patient using a plastic-tipped needle. Half is sprayed into the first nasal cavity and then the second half into the other nasal passage. The spray is used once per year in order to protect against flu infections.
Live Weakened Virus
While the flu shot uses a dead flu virus to help fight the Flu, FluMist instead relies on a weakened version of a live virus. This virus enters the patient's body in a weakened state, allowing the patient's immune system to easily fight off the virus. The body creates important antibodies, which in turn help fight off future stronger flu virus infections.
Who Can Take FluMist?
FluMist is approved for healthy children, adolescents and adults between the ages of 2 and 49 years old. However, it is advised that individuals with hypersensitivity to eggs, arginine, gelatin, gentamicin or egg proteins avoid FluMist. Asthma patients should also avoid the vaccine.
What Flu Viruses Does FluMist Work Against
Influenza A and influenza B viruses are targeted by FluMist.
