Colleges throughout the nation offer medical laboratory technician degree programs.
Medical laboratory technicians are responsible for analyzing fluids and cells in order to detect abnormalities in the body. Technicians look for parasites and bacteria and examine drug levels, cell counts and chemical content in the body using microscopes and cell counters. They then give the test results to a physician who is able to offer a proper diagnosis. Graduates of a program are eligible for certification through the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Scientists or American Society for Clinical Pathologists.
Lake Superior College
Lake Superior College offers a medical laboratory technician Associate in Applied Science degree. This program requires students to complete general education requirements, core medical laboratory technician courses, laboratory work and clinical experience. Through these education and training opportunities, students learn collect body fluids, test a variety of specimens, look for abnormalities and communicate with other medical professionals. An emphasis is placed on microbiology, chemistry, transfusion services and hematology.

Kapi’olani Community College
The medical laboratory technician degree program at Kapi’olani Community College is a two-year program that combines academic coursework with laboratory training. In addition to general education courses, students take courses in clinical microbiology, hematology, body fluids, clinical biochemistry and microscopy. Laboratory work focuses on the principles and techniques used to analyze fluids and operate equipment. Opportunities are also available to complete clinical rotations in chemistry, microbiology, hematology and at a blood bank.

Harcum College
Harcum College offers a medical laboratory technician degree that combines an online curriculum with laboratory work at a facility that is located in close proximity to a student. Online instructors communicate with students through e-mail and online discussion forums. The four-semester program requires students to complete courses in microbiology, immunology, phlebotomy, applied lab techniques and hematology.

McLennan Community College
McLennan Community College offers a medical laboratory technician associate degree program. This two-year program teaches students about the detection of diseases through bodily fluids. The courses cover topics in coagulation, urinalysis, immunology, clinical chemistry and microbiology. Students are also expected to participate in a clinical practicum under the supervision of an experienced medical laboratory technician.
