Is There A Skin Rash That Is A Sign Of Breast Cancer

Paget disease of the breast, sometimes called Paget disease of the nipple, is a form of breast cancer associated with a rash appearing on the areola of the breast. According to the National Cancer Institute, this rare disease accounts for less than 5 percent of all breast cancers.

Symptoms

Symptoms of the cancer include a red rash resembling eczema or a crusting of the nipple skin. As the disease progresses, it may be associated with burning, flaking, itching, or pain, and the nipple may flatten or become inverted.

Cause

The cause of Paget disease of the breast is unknown. This condition is often associated with an underlying mass or ductal carcinoma and is typically limited to one breast.

Diagnosis

A doctor may perform a physical exam followed by a mammogram or biopsy.

Treatment

Surgery is generally required to treat Paget disease of the breast. Surgical options include mastectomy or lumpectomy in combination with drug therapy.

Warning

The rash-like symptoms of Paget disease are often confused with dermatological conditions. Thus, it is important for women to be aware of symptoms and conduct regular self-exams of the breasts.
