How Does a Mammogram Work?
Preparation
In preparation for a mammogram, you will be asked to refrain from using perfume, lotion, deodorant or powder on the breasts, as these products can appear as calcifications on an x-ray, leading to a potential false-positive reading. The American Cancer Society recommends that you schedule your mammogram when your breasts are least likely to be tender. Usually this means about a week after your period.
The Exam
A technician, almost always a woman, will place one breast at a time between two plates. Compression is used to flatten and spread the breast tissue, making it less dense and therefore easier to read. You will be asked to remain still and hold your breath while the pictures are taken. Usually two films are taken of each breast. There may be some discomfort, but the compression is momentary. The whole process takes about twenty minutes.
Findings
In addition to cancers, a mammogram may reveal calcifications, which are small grains of calcium present in some breasts. Cysts, or fluid-filled sacs, may also be seen. Fibroids, which are firm, movable lumps, may be visible and are common in younger women. These findings may or may not be associated with malignancies. Results
Ideally, a radiologist will study the films thoroughly and compare them to previous mammography results. It is a good idea to have your mammograms done regularly at the same facility. If you are using a new center, the American Cancer Society recommends that you bring older mammography results with you or have them forwarded to the new facility. The results of your mammogram are forwarded to you and your physician. The FDA requires that you receive written results within thirty days. Some centers offer results to you before you leave the facility.
