Dental radiology involves taking x-rays of the teeth and jaw required by dentists, malpractice insurance carriers and dental insurance carriers before any dental treatment can be rendered. It is not a separate entity and is included in the job description of dental hygienists and dental assistants.
Dental Office Staff Members Permitted to Take X-rays
In addition to the dentist, dental hygienists and certified dental assistants are permitted to take x-rays under the supervision of the treating dentist.
Dental Hygienists
A dental hygienist has a state issued license and renders treatment to patients involving prophylaxis and scaling of teeth in addition to teaching proper oral hygiene techniques.
Dental Assistants
Dental assistants can receive on the job training, take high school or vocational school courses, attend technical institutes or enroll in colleges offering an associates degree in dental assisting. However, only dental assistants who are certified, licensed or registered can take dental x-rays under the supervision of the treating dentist.
Requirements for Dental Hygienists/Radiologists
A dental hygienist is required to have successfully completed a two-year degree program in dental hygiene and to have obtained a state license.
Requirements for Dental Assistants/Radiologists
Dental assistants must complete a certification program that includes courses in radiology (x-rays). Some states require dental assistants to be licensed, registered, to complete a Radiation Health and Safety examination or to pass a state-approved course in radiology.
