Saint Louis University School of Medicine
The Saint Louis University School of Medicine was established in 1836 as the first institution west of the Mississippi River to offer a medical degree. SLU focuses its research efforts on cancer, infectious disease, liver disease, aging and brain disorders, and lung and heart disease. It also played a role in developing the H1N1 flu vaccine. SLU is a private school located in the heart of Saint Louis, and has an enrollment of 700 medical students and 550 residents.

University of Missori School of Medicine
The University of Missouri School of Medicine is located in Columbia, halfway between Saint Louis and Kansas City. A public school with an enrollment of over 1,000 medical students, UM is ranked 22nd nationwide for its primary care curriculum by U.S. News World & Report's 2009 ranking of medical schools.

University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine
The University of Missouri-Kansas City's medical school offers a unique path to becoming a doctor of medicine. While most programs require a bachelor's degree to enroll in the four-year medical program, UMKC allows high school students to enroll directly into the School of Medicine. The student then completes six years of education, the end result of which is a bachelor's degree and M.D.

Washington University School of Medicine
The Washington University School of Medicine ranks as one of the most prestigious institutions in the country. Located in Saint Louis, Washington is ranked as the third best research institution and the 26th best school for primary care in U.S. News & World Report's nationwide medical school rankings in 2009. Founded in 1891, the school is home to 1,260 medical students and has helped to produce 17 Nobel laureates.

Osteopathic programs
Missouri is also home to two institutions that offer degrees in osteopathic medicine. A.T. Still University in Kirksville was established as the first osteopathic medical school in the world in 1892. Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences' College of Osteopathic Medicine, meanwhile, has been offering its program in osteopathic medicine since 2000.
