Radiation Therapist Training Programs

Cancer patients receive radiation therapy

Radiation therapists use radiation to treat cancer in the body of patients; they use linear accelerators to administer these radiation treatments. Many states require that practitioners in radiation therapy be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and pass the Registry's examination. Radiation therapy training programs help students prepare for this national exam.

Manhattan College

Manhattan College has two options for the study of radiation therapy: students can choose to obtain either a certificate of completion or a bachelor of science degree. The 27-month certificate program is an option for those who already have a bachelor's degree. The degree program has a Health Care Administration concentration which consists of 21 credits. Students who are enrolled in the radiation therapy program will complete a clinical internship that lasts for about 275 days. Students will take classes such as Radiation Physics, Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine as well as concentration courses such as Hospital Accounting, Legal Aspects in Health Care and Planning for Health Care Services.

University of Wisconsin La Crosse

The University of Wisconsin La Crosse offers a radiation therapy program that requires each student to spend at least six semesters in both pre-professional and professional courses on campus before the start of the clinical internship. The internship takes place in July of the student's senior year and continues for 13 months; the internship is held at an affiliated internship clinical site. In addition to the pre-professional courses, students will take classes such as Biology of Cancer, Health Communication and Medical Imaging for Radiation Therapists as well as Radiation Physics, Patient Care Issues and Pathophysiology.
