The Gates Foundation offers grants for many women's rights organizations.
Grants for women's rights are available from various foundations globally. These grants are often intended for nongovernmental, smaller grassroots or local organizations that have an existing program supporting some aspect of women's rights. Equal labor, reproductive and sexual rights, as well as equal access to political participation, are still areas of concern in several countries.
The Global Fund for Women
The Global Fund for Women awards grants to support women's health and sexual rights, access to education, civic and political participation, and economic and environmental justice. The organization provides grants from $500 to $30,000 for women in over 200 countries, as of June 2011. About 600 grants are awarded annually. Organizations that apply for grants must be based outside the United States, must be led by women and must be advocating for women's rights.
Open Society Foundation
The Open Society Foundation's Human Rights and Governance Grants Program awards grants to support women's rights issues in Central Europe, the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. The grants support organizations that combat violence and discrimination against women in their communities, as well as supporting women's reproductive rights. Applicants must submit a two- to three-page concept paper describing the project and desired outcomes, partners, budget and other grants for which they are applying.
The Rita Fund
The Rita Fund provides funding for women's grassroots organizations that challenge racial injustice, combat violence, prevent human trafficking, improve sexual reproductive rights, improve women's health and demand equal government participation. The foundation accepts grant applications at specific times of the year. Check the website for more information on applying for grants. Recent grantees have been the Association for Women's Rights in Development, The Mediterranean Women's Fund of France and The Reconstruction Women's Fund in Serbia.
The Channel Foundation
The Channel Foundation provides funding to organizations working to promote women's reproductive rights, advance women's leadership, end violence against women and ensure women's participation in conflict resolution and peace building. The organization grants awards primarily to grassroots groups. Prior grants have been awarded to the Fund for Global Human Rights to aid women in the Congo, and the Central American Women's Fund to win sexual reproductive rights in Central America.
