Be Creative With Your Solar Lights

Use solar lights to create sun jars.

Solar lights have practical and artistic applications that make them popular in yard decoration. During daylight hours a small solar panel on top of these devices absorbs the sun's energy to charge a battery. When it becomes sufficiently dark outside, a photoresistor inside of the light fixture opens a circuit, illuminating an LED light. There are many different types of solar lights available on the market that give homeowners and craft enthusiasts a chance to engage in creative, cost-effect projects. Sun jars are one such project and are a do-it-yourself, decorative night-light.

Instructions

1. Pour different colors of the acrylic paint onto the paint pallet.

2. Use your paintbrushes and the acrylic paint to decorate one 16 oz. glass canning jar. Do not to layer the paint too thickly or it will be difficult for light to penetrate through the glass jar.

3. Spray the frosting spray onto a second jar in an outdoor area. This spray creates an opaque layer on top of the glass that softens the glow of the light in the sun jar.

4. Put the jars outside to allow the paint and frost layer to dry for two to four hours.

5. Remove the top component of two solar garden lights from the stake that mounts them into the ground. The tops contain the solar panel as well as the plastic container that houses the LED.

6. Place the tops of the solar garden lights into sunlight to charge for approximately 6 hours.

7. Put the tops of the solar garden lights onto the mason jars as if they were a cap. Standard mason jar mouth diameters are large enough to accommodate the lights.

8. Place the jars in a dark room. Because the photoresistor inside of the solar light's cap detects that there is no sunlight present, it turns on the LED and illuminates the inside of the jar. The light illuminates the decorations painted on the jar. The frosted jar will emit a soft glow.

9. Put the entire jar, with the solar light top still inside, back outside to charge the next day so you can use it again the following night.
