Trade Schools In Portage & Summit County Ohio

Located in the northeastern portion of Ohio, Portage and Summit counties are home to the cities of Akron, Ravenna, Kent, Cuyahoga Falls, Twinsburg, Aurora and Garrettsville. In addition to large four-year institutions such as the University of Akron and Kent State University, Portage and Summit counties are home to a variety of trade schools. These private institutions grant diplomas, certificates and associate degrees in numerous fields, including cosmetology, health care and computer science.


The Ohio Academy


The Ohio Academy is a cosmetology trade school located in the Summit County community of Twinsburg. The school is affiliated with Paul Mitchell, a company that manages salons, develops curricula for beauty schools and manufactures hair care products. The cosmetology program at the Academy lasts for 1,500 hours of training in hair cutting, styling, coloring and texturizing, fashion and make-up application. The course also includes 300 hours of training in salon management, sales and communication. Day and evening classes are available. Students gain hands-on practice working with paying customers at the school's on-site salon. Graduates qualify for the Ohio state licensing exam in cosmetology. The school also offers three- to five-day courses in new or advanced techniques for licensed cosmetologists. Federal grants and loans are available for qualified students.

Northcoast Medical Training Academy


Carrying the approval of the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology, Northcoast Medical Training Academy is a health care trade school in the Portage County city of Kent. The school offers certificate programs in practical nursing, phlebotomy, massage therapy, medical assisting and veterinary assisting. Programs typically last 10 weeks to one year and are approved by the State of Ohio Medical Board. Graduates qualify for professional licensure in the fields that require credentialing, such as nursing. All students complete a clinical internship prior to graduation. The Academy participates in federal loan and grant financial aid programs. The school provides job placement assistance for all students.

Akron Institute of Herzing University


Located in the Summit County city of Akron, the Akron Institute of is a private, nonsectarian trade school affiliated with Herzing University of Madison, Wisconsin. Among the school's diploma and associate degree programs are medical office administration, billing and coding, medical and dental assisting, nursing, bookkeeping, paralegal studies, criminal justice and computer networking and security. Online courses are available in many programs. The courses of study typically require one to two years of full-time study to complete, and an internship is mandatory for each major. The school carries accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. Financial aid programs available to Akron Institute students include federal and state loans and grants, veteran's benefits, vocational rehabilitation awards, scholarships and work-study placements.
