DNA results can verify the father of a baby.
Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) can determine the parents of a child or help trace your genealogy. The most common reason to have a DNA test is to determine the father of a child. It is usually used if the mother has been with more than one sexual partner. Residents of the state of West Virginia can obtain a blood test to determine parentage by following a few basic steps. The results of the test remain confidential.
Instructions
1. Call a local blood bank to see if they are an accredited facility, such as the DNA Diagnostics Center. These centers have 26 locations in the state of West Virginia, including Charleston, Wheeling, Huntingdon and Logan. Results from an accredited facility are accepted in a court of law. A physician need not order the test.
2. Contact your family doctor or the mother's obstetrician. They can do the blood work themselves or schedule it at a West Virginia DNA facility.
3. Call a facility to inquire about hours and location. If you are unable to travel to a location, DNA Diagnostics Center will help you schedule an appointment for a DNA test at a location near you. Their number is 1-800-798-0580.
4. Order a kit online from a laboratory, such as Beta Paternity DNA Laboratories or The Genetic Testing Laboratories, Inc. These and other online facilities will ship you the information, a test kit and let you know if it is a court-approved facility. Once you receive the kit, you can swab your and your child's cheek, send it back in the return envelope and typically get a reply within one to two weeks.
