Knowing the signs your dog might be sick will help you decide when to call your veterinarian. Symptoms vary depending on what's causing the illness and each individual dog. Some illnesses will cause only one or two symptoms, while others will induce several.
Lethargy
Lethargy is a state of drowsiness or decreased activity. A lethargic dog might have a delayed response to such things as loud noises, touch and visual stimuli.
Appetite
Lack of appetite is a sign your dog might be ill. Any changes in your dogs feeding behavior should be observed and reported to your veterinarian.
Diarrhea
Diarrhea is a common sign of intestinal problems in dogs. If your dog has bloody diarrhea, you need to call a veterinarian immediately because this could be a sign of serious illness such as parvo.
Eyes
Excessive tearing or swelling and redness of the eyes are signs your dog is not feeling well. Tears and redness often have minor causes such as small scratches or injury, but they can also be a sign of more serious problems such as conjunctivitis and bacterial infection.
Urine
Unless your dog is a female in her heat cycle, blood in the urine is a sign of some very serious problems. Cancer, parasites and urinary tract infections will cause bloody urine.
Mouth
If your dog's mouth is dry or it has very pale pink to white gums, it could be a symptom of anemia. Anemia can have many causes and is usually a sign of a more serious underlying condition.
