The University of North Carolina (UNC) is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, which is in the central part of the state. UNC was founded in 1795, making it the oldest public university in the United States. UNC is a public Tier 1 research university, which means it maintains a high level of research activity. Along with a historical tradition of academics, UNC is also known for its athletic programs, particularly men's basketball. A longstanding rivalry exists between UNC and Duke University.
