What It Takes To Be An Ultrasound Tech

Ultrasound machines are used to get a picture of what is going on inside the body without the side effects of x-rays. Ultrasound techs use a transducer which emits high-frequency sound waves into the body and the machine composes a picture based on the reflection of the sound waves because different substances reflect the sound waves differently. Ultrasound technicians work in hospitals, physicians' offices, and in diagnostic labs.

Education

There is no required educational experience to become an ultrasound technician. However, most employers prefer applicants who have training and certification, but you may be accepted into a training program at a hospital directly from high school with a background in math and science, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. You may also be able to get on -the-job training in the military. If you have experience working in the healthcare industry, you may be eligible for a one year program that will not end in certification. However, many ultrasound techs attend a two- or four-year training program at a college or vocational school. Both types can end in certification; the two year associate's degree programs are more popular than the four year bachelor's degree programs according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The programs include courses on anatomy, physiology, use the equipment and care for patients.

Certification

Certification for ultrasound techs is awarded by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. In order to be eligible for certification, you must pass a general exam as well as an exam in your specialty area. Specialties that you can chose include breast sonography, neurosonography, abdominal sonography, reproductive sonography, and heart sonography. To maintain your certification, you must earn at least 30 continuing education credits every three years.

Advancement

Ultrasound technicians can advance by diversifying their specialties so they are able to work in multiple types of sonography. They can also advance in the medical field by moving into research or taking on management roles, such as becoming a sonography department head or taking on additional responsibilities for selecting new equipment.
