Automotive Engineering Technology Degrees in California
Automotive engineering technology degree programs involve the use of both lecture and hands-on components. Students learn about diagnostic procedures, repair techniques and the equipment and tools needed to repair cars. Graduates go on to work in auto dealership service departments, auto body repair shops or as a specialist in brakes, engines or other area. Several colleges in California offer a degree in automotive technology, most of which are located in the Southern area of the state.
Copper Mountain College
Copper Mountain College is located in Joshua Tree, about two hours east of Los Angeles. This school offers an automotive technology associate's degree that includes proficiencies in a number of areas, including automatic transmissions, brake technology, suspension and alignment and engine rebuilding. This program involves a two-year course cycle that includes taking classes in a specific order. Eligible applicants for this program must have lived in California for at least one year prior to the first day of classes.

Barstow Community College
Barstow Community College is located about two hours northeast of Los Angeles in the city of Barstow. This school offers an associate of science degree in automotive technology. This includes the completion of 20 credit hours in courses specific to automotive technology, 13 credit hours of electives and 27 general education credit hours. Students in this program learn entry-level skills pertaining to the tools, techniques and methods used in car repair.

Lassen Community College
Lassen Community College is located in Susanville, about four hours north of Sacramento. An associate of science degree in automotive technology is available at this school, in addition to two types of certificates of achievement: general mechanics and tune-ups. This program of study prepares students for entry-level automotive industry jobs with courses about engine repair, chassis electrical and automatic transmissions. Hands-on training is a major component in this program, and the school also has services to help students locate internships in the field.

Mt. San Jacinto College
Mt. San Jacinto College is located about 90 miles east of Los Angeles in San Jacinto. This school offers both a certificate and an associate of science degree in automotive/transportation technology. Students also can choose to obtain an employment concentration certificate in a variety of specialties, including bus/heavy duty vehicles, engine performance, alternative fuels or automotive service shop management. The program involves the application of computer programs, hands-on tutorials and audiovisuals to teach the diagnostic skills and system theory understanding they'll need to perform a job in this field. Through a partnership with American Honda, the school offers certificates in Honda automotive technology that adds to graduates' credentials.
