Obstetric Ultrasound Training Programs
Obstetric ultrasound refers to the production of computerized visual images of fetuses using high frequency ultrasonic waves. Ultrasound technicians are allied health professionals with post-secondary training in sonography technology, also known as diagnostic medical sonography. There are many programs throughout the United States that offer certificate, diploma and degree programs in diagnostic medical sonography with coursework in obstetrics. Graduates are eligible to sit the certification exam directed by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the specialty area of obstetrics/gynecology sonography.
University of Iowa
The Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa offers a certificate of completion in diagnostic medical sonography and a baccalaureate degree in radiation sciences. Students in both programs receive specialized training in obstetrical and gynecological sonography, as well as abdominal sonography, vascular technology and neurosonography. The curriculum combines both theoretical classroom education and practical clinical training, with 40 hours a week of hands-on experience in a hospital setting.
