Steps To Starting A Daycare Center In Maryland

If you love children and want to open a daycare center in the state of Maryland, there are specific requirements that must be met before applying for a license. The licensing process is lengthy and involves detailed paperwork, but fortunately, most people can qualify. Individuals who obtain a license are eligible to open a facility and offer early childhood care and education to children under the age of 5.

Instructions

1. Meet the minimum age requirement. In the state of Maryland, to open a daycare center owners must be at least 20 years of age. However, the state will grant a license to 19-year-olds who have completed an Associate's degree in early childhood education.

2. Hold a high school diploma or successfully complete a high school equivalency test.

3. Complete 6 semester hours of education. Although a degree in early childhood education isn't required to start a daycare center in Maryland, the Childcare Licensing Agency requires every daycare owner to complete a minimum of 6 semester hours of early childhood education. Classes are available at local community colleges and through home study programs.

4. Have 1 year work experience working in a daycare setting before applying for a license. This can include employment in a childcare facility or home daycare center. However, those who obtain a degree in early childhood education can open a daycare center with no industry experience.

5. Contact Maryland's Childcare Licensing Agency to begin the licensing process (see Resources). The agency will appoint a representative to oversee the application process. Applicants have to complete the background check, attend an orientation, submit necessary paperwork and provide a safe environment for children.
