An x-ray technician, often referred to as an x-ray tech, is trained to take x-rays of the body so that injuries, diseases, or other medical conditions can be diagnosed by a physician or another qualified health care professional. X-ray technicians usually work in hospitals, dental offices, or radiology clinics. They usually train for one to two years, depending on the program.

Become an Xray Tech
1. Complete your high school diploma or obtain your GED. Prepare for your career as an xray tech by taking biology, chemistry, and math classes in high school. Shadow an xray tech at your local hospital to see what the job entails.
2. Find an xray tech training program in your area. The majority of xray tech programs can be found in community colleges or trade schools. Expect to spend two years completing an associates degree in xray technology. Look for programs that offer flexible class schedules and opportunities for internships and on the job training. Make visits to prospective schools and talk with current students to find out what the program is like.
3. Ensure that the xray tech program you are interested in is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Accreditation assures that the school meets certain academic standards. Look at the list of accredited xray tech programs online (see resources).
4. Apply for an xray tech school by submitting an application to the school online or in person. Prepare to spend time in the classroom and clinical settings learning about imaging techniques, patient care, anatomy, ethics, and pathology. Xray tech schools will also teach you protect yourself from harmful radiation while operating equipment.
5. Graduate from an xray tech school and become certified by taking an American Registry of Radiologic Technologists exam. Most hospitals and medical facilities require xray techs to be certified.
