Prepare For A Gynecologist Visit

Gynecologists are doctors who specialize in women's reproductive health. Their services typically include pap smears, pelvic exams, human papillomavirus vaccinations, testing for sexually transmitted diseases and providing information about birth control options. Women should schedule their first gynecological exam at 21 or when they become sexually active. Although most women do not look forward to their appointments, you can prepare for a gynecological visit to make sure that it is as easy as possible and that the doctor addresses all of your issues.

1. Schedule your gynecological visit for a time when you will not be having your period. If you don't already have a regular gynecologist, it might be helpful to ask for recommendations from family members and close friends.

2. Collect information on your family medical history and your personal medical history. Prepare to discuss your reproductive, menstrual and contraceptive history, including the dates of your last period and gynecological visit, as well as any medications you are taking.

3. Compile a list of any symptoms you might be experiencing, including itching, irregular periods, unusual discharge or uncomfortable urination. If you need another prescription for birth control, or are thinking about switching contraceptive methods, make a note to discuss that during your visit as well.

4. Bring your lists with you to your examination, along with a pen or pencil to write down the doctor's answers to your questions. You will probably go over a lot of information with your doctor, so it's best not to try to rely on memory alone.
