Security officers protect individuals and property. The patrol premises to ward off illegal activity, including vandalism, theft and terrorism. Armed security guards must complete state required training, but officers can receive additional training through their work site's security department. The department can review instances where firearms were used with newly hired guards. Security management can review the circumstances surrounding each event and the appropriateness of the officer's decision to draw a firearm.
On-the-Job Training
New security officers should work together with seasoned officers to receive on-the-job training. This can help them to learn the ethical behaviors, policies, strategies and procedures involved in performing the job successfully. This also allows security guards to observe the process of questioning witnesses and victims and making arrests when appropriate.
