Demand for radiological technicians is projected to grow up to 17 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, making a career as an x-ray technician one with an abundance of employment opportunities. In this field, you are responsible for working one-on-one with patients and completing tasks, such as performing x-rays, MRIs and mammography. Community Technical and Adult Education
At Community Technical and Adult Education in Ocala, Florida, students can complete a radiological technology program in 22 months. Students attend the program full-time and after completion, can apply for national certification and go on to complete an Associate in Science degree. The program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education and Radiological Technology and is approved for veteran's training. Interested students should apply after completing the prerequisite courses, including English composition I, anatomy and physiology I and II, college algebra, humanities or fine arts and social or behavioral science. This is a selected admission program and qualified candidates are chosen every year in May.
Ultimate Medical Academy
The Ultimate Medical Academy (UMA), with campuses in Tampa and Clearwater, offers a basic x-ray technician program. This program takes students less than one year to complete and upon completion, students are eligible to take the Limited Scope of Practice in Radiography certification exam and will receive a diploma. Students learn from theory and laboratory instruction, with required courses in HIV/AIDS core training, patient management and care, positioning, exam and externship preparation, CPR, first aid, radiation safety and protection, anatomy and physiology, as well as a clinical externship.
Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts
At the Concord Campus of Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts, in Concord, California, a radiological technology program is available for students interested in becoming an x-ray technician. Students are trained to create images using radiation and work with doctors as part of a medical team. Some prerequisite courses must be completed before joining this program. They include 15 credit hours in the subjects of math, arts and humanities, written communications, information systems, natural sciences and social or behavioral sciences. This program takes 24 months to complete, which includes 1,992 clinical hours and 356 lab hours.
Rolla Technical Center
Rolla Technical Center, located in Rolla, Missouri, has a radiologic technology program that trains students for a career as an x-ray technician. The program takes two years to complete and is accredited by the Joint Review Committee for Education in Radiologic Technology. Students study in the areas of the chest, abdomen, spine, skull, extremities, IV therapy, vital signs, GI, GU, trauma, professional leadership and surgery. This program begins in August every year but students must apply by April 1 to be considered for acceptance.
