3D Sonogram Safety
A sonogram, or ultrasound, is a device that is used during pregnancy to give a picture of a developing fetus. The device uses sound waves to generate images. A 3D sonogram is simply a sonogram that shows a three-dimensional image.
Uses of 3D Sonograms
During pregnancy, 3D sonograms are used to rule out ectopic pregnancies, to diagnosis multiple pregnancies, to estimate delivery date and fetal weight, and to identify a number of fetal abnormalities. Preferred over 2D sonograms, 3D sonograms allow better views. Parents also appreciate being able to see their unborn babies more clearly.
Frequency of Sonograms During Pregnancy
Sonograms are used routinely during pregnancy in the U.S. The number of sonograms done is usually based on the health of the mother and any suspected problems with the fetus. Most women have two or three sonograms during an uncomplicated pregnancy.
Are Sonograms Safe?
Sonograms have been used during pregnancy since the 1950s and are generally considered safe. Unlike X-rays, there is no radiation involved. However, despite the fact that most obstetrician view sonograms as safe, studies show mixed results. Some studies found no risk from sonograms, and some studies found potential problems.
Potential Risks from Sonograms
There have been studies that have suggested a correlation between the use of sonograms during pregnancy and all sorts of problems with the baby, including low birth weight, neurological problems during early childhood, speech and hearing problems, learning disabilities, and brain damage. However, these studies have not been confirmed. Attempts to duplicate results were not successful. At this point, it does not seem clear whether or not there is risk from sonograms.
Reducing the Risk
To reduce the potential risk from sonograms, woman can elect to have fewer sonograms done during a normal pregnancy. The American Pregnancy Association recommends that sonograms only be used when medically indicated.
