Dentists are responsible for the care, maintenance and repair of teeth and the mouth. This requires specialized training in a five-year dental program, resulting in a bachelor of dental surgery degree (BDS). There are 16 accredited dental schools in the United Kingdom, according to the London-based Dental Schools Council, which handles all applications for dental study in the country. Dentists can choose to work in a private practice or at a National Health Service (NHS) clinic, where salaried dentists can earn between £37,344 and £79,875 (US $54,021 and $115,547) a year, as of May 2010.

The annual Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) named Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry one of the top five research institutions in the United Kingdom in 2008. Students at the competitive school can choose between an accelerated four-year dentistry track, which leads to a bachelor of dentistry, or a five-year course resulting in a bachelor of dental surgery degree. Applicants must take the UKCAT test, which examines cognitive ability, in addition to undergoing interviews, having exemplary grades and possessing relevant work experience.

The University of Bristol School of Oral and Dental Sciences emphasizes community involvement by employing students at its on-campus dental hospital, which serves patients in southwest England. The five-year program begins by teaching the basics, such as anatomy and biochemistry. Upper-level students spend most of their time working in clinics and little time in the classroom. Students who wish to pursue dentistry but are missing necessary prerequisites can enroll in Year 0 courses such as chemistry, physics and anatomical science.

King's College London Dental Institute is the United Kingdom's largest dental school, training one-fourth of all dentists in the country. The five-year BDS degree can be paired with a bachelor of science degree for students wishing to study more than one subject, such as neuroscience or psychology. The BDS program has three components: general medical and dental instruction, oral and dental aspects that lead to diagnosis and treatment, and clinical experience. Fourth- and fifth-year students work primarily in clinics rather than study in a classroom.
