Chemicals to Prevent Mold on Wood Under House
Mold can be a major problem in homes. Basements or spaces under homes particularly are very prone to mildew as they are generally dark, damp and not too clean places. The dark and damp environment is the best condition for growth of mold. Once the area is attacked by mold, it can be quite difficult to get rid of it. It makes more sense to prevent the growth of mold rather than tackle an infestation.
Preventive Measures
Some basic ways to keep mold away are to keep the place clean and the air dry. Dirt and grease provide food for mildew. It is thus essential to keep the basement clean. Spread some lime soda in the basement to help remove dampness and musty odors, dehumidifiers are also a good idea. Seal any cracks or gaps that give way to moisture and dampness. You can also use thick polyethylene sheets or roofing sheets in the crawl-space under houses to keep moisture away.
Fungicide
It may prove difficult to prevent mold from growing under homes. In case of mild infestation in larger areas, use Orthocine, bleach or Captan's Powder. When using Captan's Powder, add 8 oz. of it to a gallon of water. When using bleach, mix a cup of it in a gallon of water. Apply and scrub affected areas. Remember to wear gloves while working on it. If needed, you may repeat the whole process after two hours.
Attack the Source
In the event you are facing a severe infestation, you can contemplate using Bordeaux mixture. Use about 5 lb. of it in 15 to 20 gallons of water. Use a sprayer to spray the affected areas under the house. Repeat the process every three to four months to get rid of mold. Regular use will help prevent mold under homes.
Application of fungicide helps retard the growth of mold. Some popular fungicidal sealants used are Foster 40-51 and Microban. One can also opt for paint sealants, which help to keep away mold and bacteria.
Mold can eat into your wood if left to spread. A major infestation can become difficult to handle, and you may need to call in professionals.
Fungicidal Sealants
Use fungicidal sealants to help prevent mold in woodwork. It makes sense to paint the woodwork with good quality sealants that work as fungicides too. Once an area has been cleaned, spray it with a coat of the fungicidal sealant. The shiny finish will help you avoid missing areas. You may also use a fungicide tinted in white for more clarity.
