Hayward pool filter, lower housing leaking
I have a Hayward pool filter setup. Owned it for about 5 years. It's a cartridge type filter setup, (not DE). On the lower half of the filter housing, we've got a hairline crack. about 3 inches in length, midway point on the lower housing body. It's not near flange, or anything like that. When I run the pool filter, of course it leaks. maybe about 5 to 10 gallons an hour seeps out of that hairline. Rather than buy a whole new bottom housing (for $350), I was wondering if I could repair the crack? sand or grind a little on the interior, where the crack is. and then patch with fibreglass? would that hold up to the internal pressure, since the housing body does flex as pressure is applied? any recommendations? I'm really surprised at the location of the hairline crack. would've figured it would seep from a flange. Not smack dab in the middle of the housing body. FYI - I live in the SouthWest, so lots of Sun hits the housing. Also, this is the only place it leaks from. TIA -Jav the body housing that has the hairline crack is #17 is this diagram: I have not been able to repair a leak like this, it has always been replaced. It is because of the tank expanding under pressure, nothing has held it while expandind and contracting. Sorry.... It is always reccomended to replace a cracked filter tank since it is pressurized. I have a hayward star clear II model 1500 and fixed a crack on the exact same spot by applying rectorseal ep200 epoxy putty for strength (patch on inside about 4 tall x 3 wide 1/2 thick) then waited 24 hrs and and covered the entire putty patch with 3M marine adhesive sealant 5200 for flexibility and as an extra seal (it has flexibility, the putty does not, it hardens like a rock). I used the entire 3fl oz. I know it sounds crazy but it worked so far. Saltydog - I have similar issue. Did your Rectorseal EP-200 Epoxy Putty and 3m 5200 Marine Adhesive sealant solution hold up over the summer? Thanks for your help in advance! brandy1ra, this is a year old post and saltydog only posted once, I would not expect a reply. If there is something I can help with, please start a new thread.
