Tow truck drivers perform a variety of functions along America's highways, from helping stranded motorists get to an auto body shop, to removing abandoned vehicles from the highway. These professionals perform an essential function at all hours of the day and must go through an extensive amount of paperwork that includes interviews with security personnel as part of the USA Patriot Act.
Physical/Age Requirements
Tow truck drivers generally must be at least 18 years old to meet the Department of Motor Vehicles requirements to operate a commercial vehicle within the borders of any given state. According to the DMV website, drivers wishing to operate a tow truck across state lines, as a means of interstate commerce, must be at least 21 years old. Applicants will also have to pass a drug screening conducted by the DMV to qualify for a license.
License Requirements
Tow truck drivers must have a license to operate a commercial vehicle. This is commonly referred to as a CDL. The application process for such a license involves a record check of the applicant's driving record for 10 years prior to the date of the paperwork being filed. In California, as of 2005, all applicants for a CDL with an initial or renewed hazardous materials endorsement must undergo a threat assessment by the Transportation Security Administration. Other states, like New York, require a driver to obtain a tow truck driver license and submit to fingerprinting through the Department of Consumer Affairs Licensing Center.
Tow Truck Driver Certification
All tow truck drivers must have a temporary or permanent tow truck driver's certification to be employable as a tow truck driver. This certification is given out by the Department of Motor Vehicles in accordance with the National Driver Certification Procedure and is required for all drivers wishing to be employed in a freeway service patrol capacity. The test to obtain certification is administered through a variety of approved organizations, including AAA and Wreckmaster Certification. An employer that hires a tow truck driver without a tow truck driver's certification is committing a misdemeanor-level offense.
