Become A Vet Tech In Illinois

Become a Vet Tech in Illinois

As a vet tech, or veterinary technician, it will be your job to assist a veterinarian, collect samples from animals, run specific tests that the veterinarian requests and much more. To become a vet tech in the state of Illinois, you must first attend an accredited veterinary technician program. If you attend a school that is not accredited, you will not be able to legally work as a vet tech in Illinois.

Instructions

1. Enroll in a veterinary technician program that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. There are several vet tech programs across Illinois, most often found in technical or community colleges.

2. Apply for financial aid. Vet tech school can be very expensive. Apply for financial aid through your school's financial aid department or the government's financial aid website. Financial aid will help offset the costs of classes, fees and books.

3. Complete all coursework and earn your diploma. In a vet tech degree program you will take courses in a traditional classroom setting, as well as work in a hands-on environment with animals.

4. Apply to take the Veterinary Technician National Examination test through the Illinois Division of Professional Regulation and pay all applicable fees. Once your exam application is approved, it will be sent to Continental Testing Services, which administers the Illinois vet tech exams. You will be contacted with your testing date. The application process can be completed online or through written correspondence.

5. Pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam to become a licensed vet tech.
