Surgical techs assist doctors and nurses during surgical procedures.


As a surgical tech, you are part of a team of medical professionals that tend to a patients' needs while they have surgery. You may work in a variety of settings including outpatient surgery centers, hospitals and doctors offices under the supervision of a registered nurse or doctor. Before you can successfully gain employment as a surgical tech, you need to seek technical education from a college or trade school. Knowledge of surgical procedures, techniques and tools, along with safety procedures and human anatomy, is essential.

Your coursework and hands-on training prepares you for entry-level work in the field. The surgical tech program teaches you the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology along with basic surgical and laboratory skills. As a student, you learn through coursework, but you also gain hands-on experience in an unpaid internship when you finish the program.

You also learn the proper preparation of operating rooms and patients, to organize and maintain surgical instruments and equipment, proper cleaning of operating rooms, and supply stocking.

Concorde specializes in medical career training and its surgical tech program prepares you for work in hospitals, surgery centers, physicians' offices and laser centers. During the 12 month program, you learn to assist during surgery, set-up and clean-up a operating room, maintain and handle instruments and care for patients.
